Intramuros (Manila) Philippines

The oldest neighborhood in Manila is Intramuros, the Latin word for "inside the wall". In the 16th century, Manila became the capital of the Philippines and the administrative center of the Spanish colonial government. Wars and revolutions have left their mark; Many Baroque churches and palaces have been destroyed and the wall is partially in ruins. However, the area still exudes a colonial atmosphere. Intramuros is a planned neighborhood with a grid layout, large squares and a monumental governor's palace. The wall of several meters thick and the fortress with dozens of guns were built to control the rebel population. Throughout the turbulent history of Manila, the neighborhood has been reduced to rubble on several occasions, especially during World War II. Still, it remains a charming place to immerse yourself in the colonial history of the city.
